Cricket matches between India and Pakistan are always quite intense. There haven’t been many heated incidents on the pitch in the previous four or five years, but in the past, players from both teams didn’t require a second invitation to lose their composure. The renowned Indian captain MS Dhoni has been present for many of those instances. In reality, he served as the peacemaker on a few occasions, most notably when Kamran Akmal and Gautam Gambhir sparred during the drinks break in the 2010 Asia Cup. The Indian opener with the left hand was removed from the altercation by Dhoni.

Dhoni had to intervene in another incident during an India-Pakistan game at the Adelaide Oval in Australia during the 2015 ODI World Cup. It involved Pakistan bowler Sohail Khan and then-India vice-captain Virat Kohli. The latter said that Kohli was the one who instigated the verbal conflict.

Sohail claimed it occurred during Pakistan’s 301-run pursuit when he entered the batting order. When Sohail made his way toward the center, India was in control and just two wickets away from stealing yet another triumph over their bitter enemies. The right-arm pacer said that after scoring an incredible 107 from 126 balls, Kohli approached him and remarked, “Aap cricket mein abhi aaye hain.” You’ve just come, and you’ve got itni baatein karte ho.

It’s interesting to note that Sohail was the one to get rid of Kohli that day after he reached 100 runs, which led to a late collapse in the Indian batting order and prevented them from passing 220 runs, which at one point seemed likely. “I was a Test cricketer back then. I played Test matches in 2006-07. Then in between, I endured a troubled knee that forced me out of action. I said ‘Beta jab tu Under-19 khel raha tha na, tera baap Test cricketer tha’ (Son, when you were playing Under-19 for India, your father [referring to himself] was a Test player). That’s how I said it,” Sohail said on the Nadir Ali Podcast. The two team captains, Dhoni and Misbah-ul-Haq, intervened to put out the fire, according to the lanky pacer who had taken five wickets in that game.

You’ll notice that Misbah then intervened and became enraged with me. I was told to keep quiet by him. When MS Dhoni saw Kohli, he said, “Side pe ho jao, ye purana chawal hai, tu nahi jaanta isko.” Back off. He has been here for a while. You’ve never met him. Then Kohli went and stood in a corner,” the source continued. India ultimately prevailed by 76 runs in that Pool B encounter. In the semi-final, they were defeated by the eventual winners and hosts Australia. Pakistan, on the other hand, had not been able to participate in the
