For the 2017 Women’s Premier League, Mumbai Indians’ head coach will be Charlotte Edwards, a former captain of England. Jhulan Goswami, a former fast bowler for India, and all-rounder Devieka Palshikaar have also been named as the bowling and batting instructor in addition to Charlotte.
The second-highest run scorer for the England Women’s squad in ODIs and Tests is the 43-year-old Edwards. In the Women’s Big Bash League, she has coached the Sydney Sixers, Southern Vipers, Southern Brave from the Hundred, and the English domestic squad since her retirement. She has also coached the USA Women’s team on an international level. In 2009, Edwards, the captain of England, guided the team to the first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup victory as well as the ODI World Cup victory. She became a leader in women’s cricket after retiring, holding various positions on MCC and ICC committees.
Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Lucknow Warriors, and Royal Challengers Bangalore franchises have also received a bid for their squad in the 2018 Women’s Premier League, which is slated to run from March 4 to March 24. These franchises will compete against Mumbai Indians. On February 13 in Mumbai, the player auction for the WPL is planned to take place. Each team will enter the auction with a 12 crore INR bankroll. A team may purchase a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players, including five foreign players as long as one is from an Associate country.
There will be a total of 22 games contested amongst the five teams during the first season, with each side receiving eight games. The team that finishes first in the league stage points standings advances directly to the championship game. For the second slot in the final, the second- and third-ranked teams will compete against one another in the qualifier.
