There is still disagreement in the cricket community about run-out at non-end striker’s despite recent rule modifications by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Many former and current cricketers expressed their displeasure on social media when Indian women’s cricket team star Deepti Sharma ran out Charlotte Dean at the non-end, striker’s calling the dismissal against the spirit of the game. One of the game’s seasoned players, Sachin Tendulkar, has responded forcefully to those who are still questioning the dismissal’s “sportsmanship” component.
Tendulkar stated in an interview with Sportstar that the dismissal is a legal rule according to the ICC and that it is pointless to criticise someone’s “spirit of the game” if they are following the rules.”Spirit of cricket… whatever you are playing within the rules of the game, that is spirit of cricket,” he said.Tendulkar responded that the batsman deserves to be disqualified according to the ICC regulation for backing up too far when asked if he would run someone out for doing so.”It’s a rule now. If a player is short of the crease or doesn’t make the crease, then the batter is given out, right? Just like he misses a ball that’s heading toward stumps and in line of the stumps, he is given out lbw. So the ICC has introduced the rule that if you are out of the crease (before the ball is bowled), then you are run out,”
Tendulkar agreed with the Indian spinner when questioned if the Deepti Sharma incident was exaggerated, stating that she was following the rules of the game. Many find it puzzling because despite the Deepti Sharma incident being as lawful as any other dismissal in the rulebooks, it nevertheless generates discussion among fans, analysts, and former cricket players.
