Sanju Samson, a right-handed batter, has frequently found himself in and out of Team India, and he hasn’t been able to consistently obtain games. Samson was benched for the second ODI against New Zealand after scoring 36 in the first ODI due to team management’s preference for a batting all-rounder with the ability to roll his arm over. Sanju Samson was placed on the bench for the third ODI because Team India did not alter their starting lineup.

The series’ head coach for India, VVS Laxman, spoke to the host broadcaster prior to the third one-day international in which he discussed Rishabh Pant and where the left-hander should bat in ODIs. However, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor did not seem impressed with Laxman’s words, and he took to Twitter to say: “”Pant has done well at No. 4, so it is important to back him,” says @VVSLaxman281. He’s a good player out of form who’s failed in ten of his last 11 innings; Samson averages 66 in ODIs, has made runs in all his last five matches & is on the bench. Go figure. @IamSanjuSamson,” tweeted Mr. Tharoor.

One more failure for Pant, who clearly needs a break from white-ball cricket. One more opportunity denied to @IamSanjuSamson who now has to wait for the @IPL to show that he’s one of the best too-order bats in India. #IndvsNZ https://t.co/RpJKkDdp5n

Samson has played 11 one-day internationals so far, during which he has amassed 330 runs at an average of 66, with an 86 not out as his top score. We wanted the sixth bowler to come in, therefore Sanju Samson missed out and Hooda came in, India captain Shikhar Dhawan said after the second ODI was called off due to rain. Rain forced the cancellation of the second One-Day International between India and New Zealand. Rain eventually caused the game to be called off when India were 89 for 1 in 12.5 overs. Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, won the toss for the third ODI and chose to bowl first.
