Cricket fans now focus on the upcoming Women’s Premier League 2023, which begins on March 4, after the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 has concluded. Teams spent a lot of money at the player auction on February 13 to sign the players they wanted.
On auction day, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made news when they acquired international talents Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, and Sophie Devine in addition to star Indian batter Smriti Mandhana for a record INR 3.4 crore. In addition to hiring huge names, they wisely spent their money to fill in all the gaps and have a solid balance of young and experienced players on their roster. Renuka Singh, a crucial pacer for India, and Richa Ghosh, a talented wicketkeeper batter, were both acquired.
The previous Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 saw both players have a significant influence, which prompted former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra to name RCB as the top team going into the WPL 2023. He referred to Richa as the top striker and claimed that Renuka is currently India’s best pacer. Importantly, at the most recent World Cup in South Africa, the latter scored 136 runs with a 130.76 strike rate.
“In terms of bowling, the team has Renuka Singh Thakur, which is a great acquisition for the simple reason that there are not many Indian fast bowlers, and Renuka Singh Thakur at this point in time is the best fast bowler in the country, and she is in the team along with the best batter in the country as well,” Aakash Chopra said in JioCinema’s sports show ‘#AakashVani. “The player who can play best in the T20 format is Richa Ghosh, whom they have, and in today’s scenario, Richa bats really well in the lower order. So RCB is loaded with a lot of experience and superstars, with the best batter, best bowler, and best striker in Richa Ghosh,” he added.

“So, what they did for the women’s team is, they took Smriti Mandhana for 3.4 crores; it’s a tournament for 3 weeks, and you are getting 3.4 crores for 3 weeks. In the men’s tournament, they have to play for 8 weeks, and in those 8 weeks, they get thrice the amount of 10 crores. Not a single bowl has been bowled in the WPL, and if we talk about pay parity, then women are doing a lot better than men,” Aakash added.
On March 5, Royal Challengers Bangalore will play the Delhi Capitals in Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium to begin their season. Mandhana will serve as the WPL 2023 captain, and they have picked Ben Sawyer, the head coach of the New Zealand women’s team, as their head coach.
