Perth Scorchers, the Women’s Big Bash League champions for the 2021–22 season, has hired former England international Rebecca Grundy as their head coach on a two–year deal. Grundy has agreed to take on the role of head coach after serving as their assistant coach for the previous three competitions. She will take over for Shelley Nitschke, who is currently in charge of the Australian women’s cricket team’s coaching responsibilities.

She began working with Western Australia after finishing her playing career as their development coach before being named the team’s head coach prior to the commencement of the 2020–21 Women’s National Cricket League season. Together with her commitments to the WBBL, she will continue to fulfill her responsibilities in Western Australia. In regards to accepting the new responsibility, Grundy expressed her delight and that she was looking forward to it.

“I am absolutely delighted to be taking on the role as head coach of the Perth Scorchers WBBL program and I am very keen to get started,” Grundy said. “To be involved in such a successful franchise and continue my growth as a coach and as a person is a really exciting opportunity for me. We’ve got a hungry and talented list, and we’re driven to achieve long-term success for the club. Shelley (Nitschke) has been a wonderful mentor to me, and I have learned so much from her. I can’t wait to build on all her hard work and have more success with this amazing club.”

In a match against the West Indies in March 2014, Grundy made her England debut. She later participated in 12 T20Is and 7 ODIs for them. When Nitschke was the coach, the Scorchers defeated the Adelaide Strikers by 12 runs to win the WBBL championship in 2021–2022. They were unable to duplicate their previous season’s success, finishing fifth in the standings with six victories and seven defeats.
