The Mumbai Indians have named Harmanpreet Kaur as their captain for the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which is set to commence on March 4. Mumbai Indians will be hoping that Kaur can have a similar influence when the WPL begins as she did while leading the Indian team to greater heights.
The 33-year-old is one of the top cricketers in the world, having scored 3058 runs in 151 T20I games. She was the third-most expensive player for the MI franchise, having been acquired at INR 1.8 crore. On March 4, the Mumbai Indians will face the Gujarat Giants in the tournament’s opening encounter at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Gujarat has a talented team that includes players like Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, and Amelia Kerr, among others. It will be intriguing to see how MI lines up against Gujarat.
Nita Ambani, the owner of MI, voiced her opinions upon Kaur’s selection as captain. “We are overjoyed to have Harmanpreet lead the first-ever women’s cricket team for Mumbai Indians. She has steered the Indian Women’s team to some of its most thrilling victories in her capacity as national captain. And I’m confident that with Charlotte and Jhulan’s backing, she’ll motivate our MI women’s cricket team to play their best game, show pride, and further elevate the status of women in sports “she stated in a statement.
“We are so looking forward to the beginning of this new chapter for MI! I can’t wait to see our girls play the fearless and entertaining MI brand of cricket that our fans adore. More power to Harmanpreet and the entire MI team on this exciting journey ahead!” she added.
